On February 18, 1882, La société Des Charbonnages Du Gouffre was founded. They owned 10 mines. The number one was opened since 1827. The last one number 10 was Charbonnage du Gouffre. It was opened in 1916. In 1929 the company had a production of 333,000 tons annually and there were 1458 workers employed. Later in 1956 pruduction raised to 480,000 tons and there were 1723 workers employed. The rendement of number 10 was below expectations though. In 1963 production was down from 145,000 to only 83,000 tons. Number 10 was closed down on March 31, 1969. Most of the buildings that are still there date from 1934. In 1982 the place housed some zoo animals in an attempt to change it into a zoo, but it was not a success. Then the terrain was used to store building materials for a while. But in 2011 the place was abandoned. Only a few goats roam around.
